Hello, I am back with another Plumeria Guide. I love to grow flowering plants and among those Plumeria is my favorite one. So far, I have successfully grown over 20 Plumerias from a variety of species. I have witnessed that Plumeria is easy to maintain but they are sensitive to overwatering. So it's imperative to know the exact amount and timing of watering a Plumeria plant. In this article, I will guide you on when to water a Plumeria plant. You can say this is a full watering guide for a Plumeria plant.
I have been asked multiple times: "How often do you water Plumeria?". This article will help you understand the importance of proper watering for your plumeria.
Let's see what I am going to cover in this article:
- When to water your Plumeria
- How much water should I give to my Plumeria
- When to stop watering Plumeria
- When to water Plumeria after dormancy

Tip: Plumeria is a tropical plant that loves to get water on its leaves. In most tropical areas, rain is common, so the plants use water to make their leaves fresher and healthier.
When to water your Plumeria
If you are looking for a single and short answer then here is the answer to save you time:
Water your Plumeria plant when you feel the top inch of soil is dry dry. Use your fingers to feel the soil. In general, I water every 7-10 days during growing season. You should reduce watering in the dormant period.
But this single and short answer is not sufficient for all conditions and all the varieties of Plumeria.
Yes, watering can depend on the variety of plumeria that you are growing. Some varieties may require slightly different moisture levels based on their growth habits and climate conditions.
How much water should I give to my Plumeria?
Plumeria does not demand moist soil most of the time like other tropical plants. But that does not mean that you should not water it thoroughly. This is what Plumeria loves: Check the soil as I told you earlier. Let the soil dry. Once the soil is dry and you can sense it, water thoroughly. On dry soil, you can consider heavily watering as well.
But but but... Make sure that the drainage system in the soil is superb. Why stress so much on drainage? Because Plumeria is sensitive to overwatering, and standing water can lead to root and even stem rot.
If you notice yellow leaves on Plumeria that is a sign of overwatering in most of the scenarios. So you have to be careful about that.
If your soil is dry and still you are not watering it can handle it. But if you leave your plant like that for a long time you can start noticing curly leaves on your Plumeria and this is a major sign of lack of water.
In short, you should water your Plumeria thoroughly when the soil is dry and do not keep the soil moist always.
Bonus Tip: With Plumeria, less is often more—nourish it with care, but remember, overwatering can drown even the most vibrant bloom.
The exact amount of water depends upon the size of your plant, soil type, and where it is planted. For a potted Plumeria plant, you have to be more careful while watering and make sure the drainage system is really good. Keep at least 3 holes at the bottom of the pot or container. If you follow my above soil-checking method, you will be good at watering your Plumeria.
Note: Be careful in rainy times as it can make the soil soggy and cause root rot.
Should I water Plumeria during dormancy? - When to stop watering Plumeria
You can stop watering during dormancy which is the winter season. But I will not recommend you stop watering completely in winter.
You can water it. During this dormancy phase, Plumeria requires very little water (or almost no water)—water sparingly if you wish, just enough to prevent the soil from completely drying out.

When to water Plumeria after dormancy
After the dormancy period (after winter), at a point, your plumeria will start to grow again. When new growth begins, you can start watering your plant lightly. You can increase the watering as the plant enters its active growing season.
Watering Guide for Plumeria Cuttings
Watering for Plumeria cuttings is different from normal Plumeria watering. The main reason is root rot. No matter if it is growing season or not, if you keep watering like a normal plumeria plant for your newly planted cuttings, then it can cause root rot.

For your newly planted Plumeria cuttings, water sparingly until they develop roots. Once you witness the new growth, you can start watering normally but let the soil dry between two waterings.
