Sagos doesn’t like a lot of attention. Yet, we need to understand its suitable environment to make it healthy. I found my cousin's sago palm leaves turning brown and super dry.
He asked me to come to his place to see these two sago palms. This is what he said to me:
I’m not a great gardener (obviously 😅), please help. I planted these two when they were very small. So I made it till this size. But now, when new branches grow, they almost immediately turn brown and are super dry.
I have a few healthy sago palm plants, and I have experienced the same as my cousin. In this guide, I will tell you what to do when your sago palm leaves are turning brown or drying out.
At first glance, most of the gardeners will say it's either too much water or too little water. Believe me, even if you maintain the good watering schedule with perfectly well-draining soil, you might face the same problem.
In this case, you need to do this:
- Check if the only new old-aged sago palm fronds are drying out and browning. If that is the case, no need to worry.
- If the new fronds/leaves are turning brown, apply a foliar spray of manganese sulfate. This should also work on Frizzle top disease.
If there are only a few specific fronds that are browning, trim them and apply balanced slow-release palm fertilizer (You may search the internet for it. I won't recommend a brand as I am not doing affiliate marketing).
If you see only the tips of sago palm leaves turning brown, it might be due to either a low water level in the soil or chemical damage.
Check the soil, and if the soil is hard and dry, water it and keep watering every two days.

Can you see the brown tip of this sago palm frond?
For this, stop using any chemical fertilizer for the next month, and after that, apply manganese-based fertilizer.
If your sago palm is in a container, make sure the holes in the pot are working perfectly.
I consider the sago palm a low-maintenance plant in Zone 9-11.
Do your sago palms have any other type of brown spots or browning leaves? Feel free to ask me in the comment section or send the image via the contact button. I will reply asking for the picture to resolve your issue.
