I have multiple magnolia trees in my garden as I love flowering trees. I am aware of the fact that a magnolia tree can skip a flowering season. In this article, I will talk about why a magnolia tree is not flowering.
There might be multiple reasons behind it. It's important for us to identify those clearly so that there is no more confusion regarding this.
On GardenVive, I do not write tons of articles. I only write what I personally experience in my garden. Subscribe to this site to get unique gardening tips. This is something that makes me smile.
I know, we magnolia lovers, wait patiently for their blooming season. If you are not aware of their blooming season or don't know how many times a year they bloom, then it's worth checking the chart below.
Why am I sharing? Before you start complaining about your magnolia not flowering, you need to know if it's time to bloom or not.
Expected blooming time for the Magnolia tree
| Magnolia Species | Average Years to Flower | Primary Blooming Season | USDA Hardiness Zones |
|---|---|---|---|
| Star Magnolia (M. stellata) | 1 to 3 years | Early Spring (March – April) | 4 – 8 |
| Saucer Magnolia (M. × soulangeana) | 2 to 4 years | Early Spring (March – April) | 4 – 9 |
| Sweetbay Magnolia (M. virginiana) | 2 to 4 years | Late Spring to Mid-Summer | 5 – 10 |
| Southern Magnolia (M. grandiflora) | 3 to 10 years (Standard) | Late Spring through Summer | 6 – 10 |
| 'Little Gem' Magnolia (Dwarf Southern) | 2 to 3 years | Spring through Autumn (Rebloomer) | 7 – 9 |
| 'Jane' Magnolia (Little Girl Series) | 1 to 3 years | Early Spring + Summer flush | 4 – 8 |
I am assuming you are growing a magnolia that is bought from a nursery (grafted or cultivated). A magnolia that is grown from seed may take a decade to start flowering.
The most likely reasons why the magnolia is not flowering
If you got absolutely none, it's more likely the weather or tree behavior. Like rodedendrons, some trees like that may skip a year if the weather damages the buds or the mood strikes. That's what I would suspect. There's always next year!
I have experienced this several times with several magnolia trees.
The same happened with some fruit trees as well.
In this case, you do not have to worry and wait for the next flowering season.
Check if it's their flowering season or not. If it's their flowering season and there are no flowers or buds on your magnolia tree, it's time to take measurements.
If grown from seeds
Note: As I said in the chart, magnolia trees take years to show their first flowers if they are grown from seeds. (Around 5 to 15 years)
Sunlight issue
Too much shade or partial shade can decrease the chances of flowering. Magnolia loves 6-8 hours of direct sunlight.
I have created a sunlight requirement chart for all the major plants that you can check here: Sunlight requirement charts for plants and trees
Pruning mistake

Last year, I pruned one of my magnolia trees just after bud formation. This year I got zero buds...
This is a common mistake, and it can skip blooming during the next flowering season.
I suggest you check my pruning schedule chart: When to cut back plants - Chart
Late frost damage
Frost in mid-winter is not an issue for a magnolia tree. But if your magnolia tree catches a late frost, especially a late frost in spring when there are buds, the buds are not gonna open.
It can even skip the next year's blooming. This is how a magnolia tree tries to survive or save energy.
I am not gonna talk about pest damage here, as if you can see pests or bugs, you should search for how to get rid of that specific pest.
Lastly, there is one more tip:
You can use a foliar spray that contains monopotassium phosphate (MKP). It encourages bud formation.
But trust me, it won't overcome major issues like insufficient sunlight, immaturity, or frost damage.
I have listed only the major issues. If there is anything else that you suspect, feel free to contact me by subscribing to this site.
