Okra can be easily grown in warm climates. The ideal USDA zone to grow okra is zone 7 to zone 11. Brown spots on okra leaves are common, and in this article, I will share my experience with this issue.
Note: Untreated brown spots on okra leaves may decrease the harvest. So, it's better not to avoid this issue and treat it accordingly.
Causes and treatment
I am listing the most common reasons that may cause brown spots on okra leaves:
- Too much heat during the rainy season
- Brown Blotch Disease
- Cercospora Leaf Spot (I have talked about this earlier in one of my older articles - Cercospora on malabar spinach ). Not gonna explain this again here.
- Cold-damaged leaves of okra
Too much heat during the rainy season

The three major things at the same time that can boost the brown spots disease on okra leaves are:
- A susceptible host (the okra plant)
- A pathogen (fungal spores)
- The right environmental conditions.
Here, heat and rain at the same time increase the humidity, and this is why the chances are higher at this time to witness okra leaves turning brown.
Treatment:
You can use fungicide to avoid this issue and avoid planting okra too close together to improve air circulation.
Companion planting is not gonna help here.
Note: I have seen some gardeners using shade cloths on okra plants. But believe me, they can handle the heat, and there's no need to use shade cloths. Just make sure you water in the evening as well when it's too hot.
Brown Blotch Disease on Okra plants
If you witness the blemishes on your okra leaves are dark, circular, and spreading rapidly (more than you can imagine), it may be due to brown blotch disease.
It is the worst fungal disease that you can ever see on okra plants. pathogen Bipolaris oryzae - is responsible for this brown spot disease.
The easiest way to identify this is to look at the pods and stems. This fungus can infect the pods and stems along with leaves.
The Bipolaris oryzae spores multiply rapidly when temperatures sit between 77°F and 86°F.
Treatments:
To be honest, there is no effective organic treatment for this disease. You can prune the infected leaves to save other plants.
I suggest you use Fungicides containing Mancozeb, Chlorothalonil, or Copper oxychloride; they are highly effective at controlling Brown Spot disease.
Cold-damaged okra leaves
Okra leaves can't tolerate cold that much. It can't handle frost at all, and even temperatures lower than 60°F are dangerous for an okra plant.
If the temperature is lower than its cold tolerance, the plant will go into stress and in result, you are gonna witness brown spots on the okra leaves.
If you are from a colder region, I suggest you grow this in pots or containers and bring them inside when required.
In tropical climates, you don't have to worry at all.
