A sloping landscape is difficult to maintain. This article is dedicated to all those who want flowering plants in their sloped area.
If I make a list of 10 or 15 flowering plants, that will be total trash because I don't know where you are from, what your choice is — annual or perennial—or whether your sloped area is sunny or shaded. To make this article helpful for everyone, I have considered all these factors and categorized my lists into several categories.
I will also mention the USDA zone (where it can perform well) and if it is annual or perennial beside every plant name in my lists. It will help you to decide if you can choose that plant or not.
The lists are divided into the below categories.
- Sunny areas with extreme heat
- Shaded areas with partial sunlight
- Almost no direct sunlight or little sunlight areas
Scroll or drag the tables side-wise (on mobile devices) to avoid missing any information. The tables are wide with lots of information on the flowering plants like their preferred soil type, maintenance difficulty, annual or perennial, and USDA zone where they can perform well.
As I am from zone 10, I love this the most and it can perform best in Zone 10 to Zone 12.
Flowering Plants to Grow on Slopes with Full Sun
Plant | Annual or Perennial | Best for Zone | Max Height | Soil Type Required | Maintenance Difficulty |

Creeping Phlox | Perennial | 3-9 | 6 inches | Well-drained, rocky or sandy | Low |
Lavender | Perennial | 5-9 | 2-3 feet | Well-drained, sandy | Low |

Creeping Thyme | Perennial | 4-9 | 2-3 inches | Well-drained, moderately dry | Low |
California Poppy | Annual | 6-10 | 12-18 inches | Well-drained, poor to average | Low |
Russian Sage | Perennial | 4-9 | 2-4 feet | Well-drained, dry | Low |
Snow-in-Summer | Perennial | 3-7 | 6-12 inches | Well-drained, dry | Low |
Coral Bells | Perennial | 3-8 | 6-18 inches | Well-drained, rich | Moderate |
Gazania | Perennial | 8-10 | 6-12 inches | Well-drained, sandy | Low |
Sedum (Stonecrop) | Perennial | 3-11 | 3-12 inches | Well-drained, rocky or sandy | Low |
For slopes, in colder climates, you can find plants with lower heights as the sunlight does not heat up the ground that much and they perform well. But in warmer zones, the full sunlight areas will heat up easily and its nature makes most of the flowering plants a bit taller.
The people from a bit warmer locations can check: how to grow Lavender in Zone 9
Gazania is a perennial in tropical climates but I have grown this in zone 10 in pots and they perform well in winter. In spring or summer, there will be fewer blooms.
